What the details mean
- Resolution: the width × height in pixels of the video the camera actually sends. If the camera does not support the resolution you pick above, you get the closest one it can do.
- Measured frame rate: how many frames actually arrived in the last second. Many webcams lengthen exposure in dim light, which lowers the frame rate.
- Max resolution and frame rate: the camera's top capability as reported by the browser. Some browsers do not provide it.
If the camera will not start
- Browser permission: allow the camera from the lock icon next to the address bar, then reload.
- System permission: on Windows, allow your browser under Camera in the privacy section of Settings; on macOS, under Camera in Privacy & Security in System Settings.
- Other apps: a video call app that is using the camera can block it. Close the app and try again.
- Hardware: check for a privacy shutter or camera key on laptops, and try another USB port for an external webcam.
If the picture is dark or choppy
Light in front of your face improves both image quality and frame rate. Plug the camera straight into the computer instead of a hub, and see whether a lower resolution stops the stutter.
